The last time i play a lot with the instant messaging protocol jabber. It is amazing! Here a few benefits of it:

* distributed server model similar to smtp
* supports multi user chat rooms like irc
* transports which creating a server side bridge for a lot of services and other instant messaging services
* the protocol is open

I hope over the time this is good replacement for irc and icq.
